How To Become a NSG Commando - National Security Guards

  What is NSG?

  • The National Security Guard (NSG) is an elite counter-terrorism unit under the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).   
  •  It was founded on 22 September 1986 under the National Security Guard Act.  
  • National Security Guard personnel are sometimes referred to as The Black Cats
  • The NSG is a 'Federal Contingency Deployment Force' to tackle all facets of terrorism in the country. 





  Eligibility Criteria :

  • Candidates must have 10+2 degree from any stream. 
  • Candidates must be a Indian national only.
  • Candidates must be a part of indian armed forces as their no direct selection for NSG.

  • The minimum number of service required in the indian army is 3 years and 5 years in case of a police force candidate.

  • Age should be less than 35 years old.




 Selection Procedure :

    Qualification training-

  • Qualification Training is essential training for three months, followed by advanced training for nine months. 
  • Activities like jumping from heights, fighting in severe conditions, etc. are carried out to ensure that they can perform under stress. 
  •  The selection gets hard here, and the dropout rate is 70-80%. 

    Final advanced training-

  • The final training lasts for nine months with intensive activities. 
  • Candidates go through activities like surveillance, bomb defusal, unarmed combat, reflex training, etc. 
  • Candidates who complete both the training, basic and advanced, are selected for NSG and provided additional training. 
  • The advanced and basic training is held in the National Security Guard training center in Manesar, Haryana.     

Salary & Benefits:

The pay-scale for an NSG commando is the same as any military officer in the Indian Army. The only difference is that the NSG commandos get special allowances and salaries for their unique skillset and qualifications. 

Since the personnel in the NSG force are from the Indian Army or Central Police Armed Force, the two types of allowances provided to a National Security Guard commando are -

  • Special forces allowance, which is around Rs 27,000 per month after the seventh pay commission for officers.
  • Deputation allowance, which is Rs 5,000 per month after the seventh pay commission. 

On average, the salary of an NSG commando is Rs 10 Lakhs per annum. The para commando salary can vary slightly depending on the rank in the army/police. 



  Roles of different group in NSG:

  • Special Action Group - This is the NSG's principle strike unit. The members of this group are picked up exclusively from the Indian Army. The commandos part of this group are responsible for counter-terrorist, counter-hijacking operations, etc. 
  • Special Ranger Group - The commandos in this group are responsible for the security of VIPs. Commandos admitted in this force are drawn from the Indian Army, State Police Force. 
  • Special Composite Group - This group is tasked with counter-terrorist actions and are deployed in 5 regions - Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Gandhinagar
  • National Bomb Data Center - This group was formed in 1988, and a role structured as defined in 2000. As the name suggests, this group's commandos must monitor and analyze all bombing incidents across the country. The officials admitted in this group are either from the Indian Army or a military force.
